When Electrum was founded, the original team wanted to make sure they were building something where they could keep creativity at the core. As a result, there has been a strong focus from the very early days on making sure Electrum is a place where everyone has the opportunities they need to grow professionally and personally.
By making it easy for people to access the tools and support they need to make progress, we believe that we can drive careers forward, deliver great work and help our team make a broader impact in their personal lives.
As the company has grown, we’ve been careful to not let this focus on “holistic” growth slip. Here are a few practical ways that we build opportunities for development into our day-to-day.
Creating space for growth every day
Personal leadership programmes
Every year, an external expert runs career coaching workshops to help us work through conflict management, team dynamics and growth mapping. The goal behind these workshops is to equip us with important soft skills that we can apply both at work and in our personal lives. The sessions take place during working hours because we believe that doing mental work is as important as project work.
Donation matching scheme
We care about giving back to the community, but we believe that to do this authentically – and make the most impact – the decisions need to be decentralised. Every year, we all have the option to make a donation to a charity of our choice and have Electrum match our contribution up to R10 000. In this way, we each have the autonomy to decide where we want to make a difference and have our generosity boosted so that we can make double the impact for our personal community.
Extended education opportunities
We’re passionate about education and believe there is always more to learn. If any of us can motivate why learning about something will help drive our career forward, Electrum will willingly purchase books and sponsor courses.
Weekly learning sessions
Every Monday morning, we host a company-wide meeting. Each individual has a turn to “host” the session, and part of this involves sharing a 10-minute learning presentation. There are no rules around what the individual has to share, so they have the floor to teach the broader team about anything they are passionate about. This helps promote public speaking skills and encourages conversation and engagement around topics that are not strictly work-related. This year, we learned about everything from caring for indoor plants to the “iron triangle”, Amapiano and hiking hacks!
For Electrum to make a difference – both for our customers and the community – we need our team members to lead the way. By creating the space for each other to achieve the goals we set for our careers and ourselves as human beings, we can help each other make progress on that journey.
