As an Electrum developer, Yamkela Venfolo already has plenty to do, but when he explained his idea for a Getting Started meet-up, we knew immediately how worthwhile it would be. Prior to joining us, Yamkela ran a mentoring programme for township youth in Cape Town, and he shared his insights into the difficulties facing young people who have little career guidance, mentorship and resources.
a platform to bridge the gap between studying and a first job…
He wanted Getting Started to be a platform to bridge the gap between studying and a first job, create a network of young people who could share their experiences, and offer mentoring. He organised the inaugural meet-up for the 24th of August at UCT, and asked Electrum to be involved.
Electrum Finance Specialist Ian Nixon, Capitec New Products and Channels Specialist Qhawekazi Mtini and Invictus Capital Software Engineer Bongani Sibanda were all guest speakers at the event. The topics covered included personal finance, interview pointers and software engineering career opportunities – and the audience was so engaged, the one-hour session stretched to two.
we’re always happy to get behind our team members when they’re passionate…
Initiatives like Getting Started fit right in with our philosophy at Electrum – our products promote financial inclusion, with the potential to transform the lives of ordinary South Africans. We also believe that corporate social responsibility is of great importance in a country like ours, with its high levels of inequality. With the right support, Getting Started will prep young South Africans for successful careers, while promoting diverse workplaces.
Besides the wealth of ideas and experience diversity brings (as Yamkela himself demonstrates), Electrum is always happy to get behind our team members when they’re passionate about something. We love creating a workplace where people have a sense of purpose, because it makes Electrum a worthwhile place to work at.We’re always looking for people who share our values of promoting financial inclusion and community development, and who seek the kind of work they can feel passionate about.
